City Portrait
Magnet for tourists
Roughly one million overnight stays each year indicate Lübeck's importance as a tourist attraction. The North German, red-brick, gothic look, the attractive museums and the narrow alleyways of the Old Town attract visitors from near and far - not just from Scandinavia.
In summer especially, the Baltic coastal resort of Travemünde, a district of Lübeck, known throughout the world and feted as "Lübeck's most beautiful daughter", has a special position in the cityscape. In addition to water, beaches and sun, Travemünde also offers a significant portion of maritime flair in combination with the ships and large ferries entering the River Trave, all of which exert a significant pull on large numbers of "ship spotters".
