Medical engineering and high-tech companies
Up in the lofty north, Lübeck has developed to become a leading centre of medical engineering and medical IT. Comprising almost 50 companies, some internationally renowned such as Dräger and ESKA Implants, 3,500 employees with a turnover of roughly 500 million euros, this industry is one of the main focuses of the economic structure in the Hansa city. Cooperation with the University of Lübeck, the University Clinic and suitable courses at the Lübeck Polytechnic means that companies receive inspiration for the development of new products.
Lübeck now has four high-powered colleges of higher education, which in some faculties are numbered among Europe's elite. It also has several research institutes, including the Academy of Hearing Aid Acoustics and the Medical Laser Centre. In addition, the interdisciplinary-structured courses in computational life science or the medical technology course, a collaboration between the university and the polytechnic college, underline the importance of the topic of life science in Lübeck.
