International contacts and close relations
As a major city on the outer reaches of Germany and the gate to the Baltic Sea, Lübeck has always maintained international relations. Lübeck is twinned with five partner cities: With La Rochelle on the Atlantic coast in France, with Kotka in Finland, with the port city of Klaipeda (Memel) in Lithuania, Visby/Gotland and the neighbouring city of Wismar. Lübeck also has close ties with over 100 cities, organised within the Hansa network which was re-established in 1983. It is also a member of the Union of the Baltic Cities (UBC), a network of roughly 100 cities on the coast of the Baltic.
Friendship agreements also tie Lübeck with the cities of Kawasaki/Japan, Venice/Italy and Shaoxing/China. There are also regular city contacts with Antwerp, Bamberg, Bergen, Coventry, Danzig, Gothenburg, Helsinki, Ibaraki/Osaka, Kaliningrad, Kalmar, Malmö, Oldenzaal, Regensburg, St. Petersburg, Slubice, Stettin, Stockholm, Tallinn, Trelleborg, as well as Zutphen and Zwolle.
