Der Mann mit dem FagottDer Mann mit dem FagottThe Man with the Bassoon
Germany 2011, 204 Min.
The touching history of Udo Jürgens’ family begins in the late 19th century in Bremen, where his grandfather Heinrich Bockelmann meets a street musician. He is so inspired by the encounter that the unknown busker’s music points him towards Moscow. Here Bockelmann rises to become one of Russia’s most influential bankers, but with the onset of World War I, the fortune shatters and the family is forced to emigrate. 20 years later his son Rudi lives in Austria with his family, where they experience the Nazi terror first-hand. Especially Rudi’s son Udo has a hard time. The sensitive boy would rather play the piano than distinguish himself in the Hitler Youth. After the War, Udo intends to make his dream of being a musician come true. But his career gets off to a sluggish start: In the mid-1950s he is still earning his living as a bar pianist in Salzburg. But in 1966 his song “Merci Chérie” wins the Grand Prix d’Eurovision de la Chanson in Luxemburg – the onset of one of the most impressive musical careers in the German history of music.
