Seal, kus lopeb luuleDas Ende der PoesieThe End of Poetry
Estonia 2009, 114 Min., English subtitles
Subdivided into the country's memorial days and holidays, this film by the famous cameraman and director Arko Okk portrays well and less known Estonians. These include the painter Evald Okas, born in 1915 and still active as an artist in his retirement home; the scientist and politician Endel Lippmaa and the author and officer Leo Kunas, who comment the political situation in Estonia; but also a teacher, who grew up in Soviet exile as the son of Estonian victims of Stalin. Arko Okk honours a librarian and the proprietor of a flag shop as well as his own mother. Furthermore, the film embeds texts by the author Jaan Kross (1920-2007) and choir music by the composer Veljo Tormis into historical and everyday contexts, giving an immediate impression of Estonian creative work.
