Hoppet Hoppet Leaps & Bounds

Sweden 2007, 86 Min., German dubbed w. introduction

Hoppet

Twelve-year old Azad is an enthusiastic high jumper, but his homeland is torn by civil war and his talent is of no use to him. One day his family decides to flee to relatives in Frankfurt on the Main. Azad and his older brother Tigris are to leave first, with a befriended family. Their parents want to follow as soon as possible. Azad and Tigris realize too late that they have been tricked by people smugglers and are left stranded in Sweden. They find refuge with another family of refugees, but are exploited and treated badly by the latter. However, Azad does not give up hope of seeing his parents again. By making it onto a team of high jumpers he finally gets a chance to travel to Germany. And when he then stands face to face with his idol, Swedish high jumper Kajsa Bergvist, he knows: his dreams of flying have come true. Director Peter Næss gives an intense and touching account of the toughness of reality and the not at all ‘high-flying’ dreams of a child refugee.
