Börn NatturunnarKinder der Natur – Eine ReiseChildren of Nature
Iceland / Norway / Germany 1991, Norwegen
In simple, unpretentious images, it tells of the fate of widower Thorgeir, who leaves his old farm and goes to Reykjavik, where he finds he is not welcome in his daughter's tiny apartment and has to stay in a retirement home instead. There, he meets Stella, his old sweetheart from the fjords. She encourages him to rebel against the strict regime of the retirement home and the two of them then run off together in a stolen jeep to revisit the west of Iceland in search of the happier times they once knew there. Fridriksson succeeds in lending a metaphysical dimension to the sociological subject matter in this portrait of two elderly mavericks set in an archaic landscape (fabulously captured by Iceland's most famous cameraman Ari Kristinsson) - a film that has become the defining benchmark of a specifically Icelandic cinema.
