Maria Larssons eviga ögonblick Die ewigen Augenblicke der Maria Larsson Everlasting Moments

Sweden 2008, 130 Min., English subtitles

Maria Larssons eviga ögonblick

Malmö in the year 1909: Maria Larsson, housewife and mother of five, leads a frugal, laborious life. Her husband Sigge is a hard-drinking harbour worker who cheats her where he can. Maria derives her only pleasure from a camera she won in the lottery. Pederson, known as Piff Paff Puff, is the owner of a photo store who discovers Maria's photographic talent. A delicate, platonic romance ensues. When her husband is drafted into the First World War, Maria dares to open a studio for portrait photography. Jan Troell, the master of Swedish narrative cinema, has created another cinematic pearl with “Everlasting Moments”. Minimal filmic means suffice for the “poet with a camera” to achieve a maximum in emotionality and narrative continuity. Troell's film is based on the life story of a relative. And along the way he gives an account of the history of photography and how it helped women in their emancipation.
