Vedramót

Iceland, in the year 1970. Because she is so enthusiastic about anti-authoritarian education, law student Selma leaves her bourgeois home and travels to the north of the country where her friend Bloffi runs a home for juvenile delinquents. The centre is situated on a remote former farm, somewhat resembling a hippie commune, and orients itself along liberal, anti-pedagogic guidelines – i.e. none at all. This seems to work fine, until Disa arrives, a particularly unruly, truculent pupil. The girl had been abused by her father, and having been shifted off into this isolation, she not only instigates the inmates against the pedagogues, but her schemes also succeed in disrupting the latter's solidarity. Ensuing acts of violence culminate in a death and Bloffi is forced to take responsibility. 30 years later the events surprisingly catch up with the people involved ... Director Gudny Halldórsdóttir takes an astoundingly authentic look back at the 1970s in her autobiographically inspired feature film about juvenile underdogs – a topic also treated by the Icelandic documentary film “At the Edge of the World” (see p.XX).
