Georg

The melodious voice of tenor Georg Ots (1920-1975) made even the schmaltziest songs sound irresistible. And thanks to his extensive classical repertoire he not only starred in Soviet film musicals, but sang opera on such prestigious stages as the Tallinn Opera House and the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. Director Peeter Simm has created an elaborate biopic, depicting the career of one of the Soviet Union's most popular singers. He meticulously reconstrues a portrait of the socialist culture industry, which by no means lacked glamour. He foregrounds Georg Ots' turbulent marriage with his second wife of three, Asta, just as the historic zeitgeist from the World War II Leningrad Blockade to “socialist modernism” entertainment shows of the 60s and 70s.
