“Think of something nice. Think of Sweden,” is what Irene Krausz-Fainman‘s mother would say to her when she asked about their shared experience in Ravensbrück concentration camp. “I don‘t like talking about the war.” Now, her daughter has a chance to make up for that. Irene Krausz-Fainman is one of almost 30,000 people liberated from concentration camps who were relocated to Malmö by the Red Cross beginning in April 1945. Malmö became their first stop in a new life. Director Magnus Gertten talked to three of them, all of whom were children when they arrived in Sweden. They recount the anguish of the camps, and the joy they experienced when they were rescued and made it to Sweden. Original footage of the “displaced persons'” arrival and settlement in Malmö‘s refugee camps complements their harrowing accounts. They also marked the starting point for Gertten‘s research; he showed the archive material to the very people who had been filmed 65 years earlier.
