Lara lives with her son Eldar in a dreary settlment on the outskirts of Keflavík. She hopes her job in airport customs inspection will help her escape her constant money troubles. When Adja tries to travel onward to Canada with a false passport, Lara makes sure she's discovered. Adja has to go to prison for 30 days and is then taken to a refugee shelter. The Iceland depicted in “And Breathe Normally” is far from postcard perfect; instead, it's defined by staunch realism. After Lara loses her flat, she and her son sleep in the car. The city appears in bleak colours; there's usually an icy wind blowing through the streets. This makes naturally humane gestures all the more searing, and it will be Adja, of all people, who helps Lara and Elmar by taking them in to the refugee shelter.
