Magnus Carlsen seems to be a chess player from another planet. Where others see a board in chaos, he knows exactly what comes next. Blindfold chess against 10 opponents at once? No problem for him. This extraordinary Norwegian talent became a grandmaster at the age of 13. In 2013, he became world champion at 22, and he remains the reigning champion today. The film traces his life from early childhood. Using home movies, television reports and interviews, it follows his path from an introverted child who thought of nothing but chess and was tormented by classmates, to celebrated world champion and fashion model. It’s an informative film that becomes sort of a thriller when Carlsen, after almost botching it in a Candidate’s Tournament, challenges incumbent world champion Viswanathan Anand – and showing nerves in the face of all the hustle and bustle.
