Documentary, Iceland 2016, 86 Min., iceland., engl. OV, engl. st
In the Round of 16 at the 2016 UEFA Euro Cup, Iceland – considered a midget among football teams – won against the highly-paid professionals of the England team. Was it a surprise? Not really. This documentary begins long before that summer when the Icelandic players and their fans captured the imagination of the rest of Europe. It follows the team, the trainers and the small staff over the course of two years, through the qualifying round, when it was not at all certain Iceland would even make it as far as the Euro tournament in France. It illustrates how a close-knit alliance of ambitious players was built around team captain Gunnarsson and record-setting scorer Gudjohnsen; a group that was known at home as the “golden generation”. And we see how the Icelandic football association constantly fostered its young talent, building indoor pitches and bringing committed professionalism to the development of its trainers.
