Abou Bakar Sidibé fled the conflict in his home country of Mali. He had been living in a refugee camp in Morocco for more than a year when filmmakers Moritz Siebert and Estephan Wagner gave him a camera and asked him to document life in the camp. Living in the open air, Sidibé can see the border fence that separates Africa from Europe. The film is a radical experiment. Sidibé’s footage shows us an unvarnished reality we would otherwise never see – the reality of border defences. Wagner said that the filmmakers and Sidibé had agreed that the refugee would not put himself in danger. Even having a camera in the camp is a big risk. “And then you get more footage from him and see the images and your heart races because you realise that they tried to get over the fence. And he actually had the camera with him.”
