Like many high streets, Hamburg’s Neue Grosse Bergstrasse has been in continuous decline for years. At the end of the 1990s, artists took over the empty shopfronts and the street became the centre of a cultural scene. In 2008, the city approved plans for a “town centre” building that would include shops, apartments and social service institutions. But initially, no investor could be found for the project. Then Ikea expressed interest in building a city centre branch. This documentary follows the construction work and interviews local residents, activists, shop owners and artists about the changes to the street. It presents the imaginative resistance initiatives and visions that were mounted against the plan, but also the sense of helpless impotence in the face of political arbitrariness.
