“Europe made me crazy”, says Ahmed, who was pushed back and forth between Italy, Finland and Sweden for six long years. When he first arrived and requested asylum on the Italian island of Lampedusa, his fingerprints were entered into the Eurodac database. The digital system is the backbone of the Dublin Regulation, which is intended to ensure that refugees can request asylum in only one EU member state. But that system did not meet Ahmed’s needs. He had no prospects in Italy, so he managed to make his way to northern Europe. And there something unexpected happened – he became the lead in a short film, one that told the story of his situation. “Dublin” (2012) was successful on the festival circuit, but Ahmed’s status remained unclear. So the filmmakers continued to accompany him in his travails, and ended up being his last good hope.
