Documentary, Iceland 2013, 62 Min.
As explosions tear up the rural silence on the evening of 25. August 1970 in north-eastern Iceland, it marks the climax of a conflict between local farmers and power plant operators preparing the construction of a 50 meter-high dam on the Laxá river. The flooding of large parts of the landscape would cause an ecological catastrophe and destroy countless lives. Because petitions and demonstrations are to no avail, the population resorts to violence ... 60 perpetrators were charged for their attack of an embankment. But only now are they prepared to break their silence. Augmented by historical documents, the film presents Laxá farmers and fishermen who stand unabated behind their radical act. “They were uncompromising,” says director Grímur Hákonarson, and: “They were successful.”
