Aska

AshAska / Asche

Documentary, Iceland 2013, 95 Min.

When the Eyjafjallajökull volcano erupted in southern Iceland on 14. April 2010, the whole of Europe was in a state of concern as international air traffic was impacted for days by the vast amount of discharged ash. While the air traffic soon turned back to normal, the everyday lives of the inhabitants around the volcano had changed for good. Three farmers and their relatives from the immediate area around the Eyjafjallajökull volcano give accounts of how the ash and glacial melt water have affected their livestock, grasslands and fields, as well as their psyches. The film accompanies their struggle throughout the course of a year. It tells of solidaric relief action, volcano tourism, and the effects of the financial crisis, which has ultimately hit the farmers harder than the unleashed forces of nature.
