Kirchlicher Filmpreis - Begründung der Jury

Anläßlich der 44. Nordischen Filmtage Lübeck 2002 vergibt die Jury den mit 2.500 EUR dotierten Kirchlichen Filmpreis an:
 
Möwengelächter / The Seagull' s Laughter / Mávahlátur
 
Du sollst nicht töten! Kann eine Jury, die dem Evangelium ebenso verpflichtet ist wie ästhetischen Kriterien, einen Film auszeichnen, dessen weibliche Hauptfigur egoistisch, machthungrig und vielleicht sogar eine Mörderin ist? Sie kann es, wenn diese Figur so ambivalent wie Gudmundssons Freya ist. Eine Göttin der Ausgestoßenen und Misshandelten ist sie, diese provozierende Schöne, aber auch ein dunkler Spiegel für eine scheinheilige Gesellschaft, die christlich ist, solange das nicht heißt, Säufern und Sündern die Tür öffnen zu müssen.

Church Film Prize - Statement of the Jury

On the occasion of the 44th Nordic Film Days Lübeck 2002 the Jury awards the Church Film Prize amounting to 2,500 EUR to:
 
Möwengelächter / The Seagull' s Laughter / Mávahlátur
 
for the following reason:
 
Thou shalt not kill. Can a jury devoted as fully to the message of the gospels as to aesthetic criteria award its prize to a film whose leading woman is selfish, power-hungry, and possibly a murderess? It can, if that figure is as ambivalent as Gudmundsson’s Freya. This provocative beauty is a patroness of the marginalised and the maltreated, holding a mirror that reflects, as through a glass darkly, the hypocrisy of a society whose Christianity does not extend to opening its doors for drunkards and sinners.
